Putting A GPS In Your PDA
Most people in this day and age have a
PDA or a Personal Digital Assistant. They are very useful since they can
keep up and remind you of appointments; store your personal information and
business information. Some PDA’s can even turn into a phone. If you install
a GPS system onto your Personal Digital Assistant, then you can get
directions or information about your location any place and any time.
Before you invest your hard earned money
into a Global Positioning System for your Personal Digital Assistant, you
should find out exactly how accurate the system should operate. All of the
GPS units utilize information from the satellite network; however, how
accurate the information you get is depends on your PDA clock hardware.
Atomic clocks are fitted onto the
satellites, which are extremely expensive and very precise. The Global
Positioning Unit clocks that are in PDA’s are not as accurate
unfortunately. Unless you are very precise with your position, you can
easily pick a Personal Digital Assistant GPS device with a time piece that
is less expensive and still be able to find it very useful.
Your Global Positioning System unit will
send out signals to the satellite network, sending a timestamp, and those
satellites that are available will compare that timestamp with the timestamp
from the signal that was received previously. Next, the satellite will
figure out how long it took for the signal to get to it, and compare that
with the approximate location of the other satellites in the network. This
is how the satellites triangulate your position on earth. It takes at least
three satellites to gather all of the information together so they can
advice your location. If a fourth satellite is used, then it can give enough
information to determine your altitude.
You will need to decide how you are going
to use your Personal Digital Assistant GPS unit. This way you will only get
the features that you will need. A Global Positioning System that is
designed to be used in your vehicle while you are moving down the road can
come with voice-activated instructions that tell you where and when to turn,
how far away from your destination you are, and other important information
you need. This is a safer type of GPS unit since you never have to take your
eyes off the road to see where to go next. If you only need something to
direct you while you are out walking or hiking, then you can go with a less
expensive alternative.
Normally, the more advanced Personal
Digital Assistant GPS systems will come equipped with all kinds of maps that
will continuously update your location on the map itself. It can also give
you voice instructions like where you should turn next and when you should
turn. A cheaper option will allow you to transfer regular maps by using your
personal computer or Mac. You can take these maps and compare your position
and compare it to your destination.
